DESCRIPTION:Reading aloud to children is one of the best things you can do for their development. Not only is it fun\, but it is also a bonding experience that can impact their literacy skills\, emotional well-being\, and love of reading. Studies have shown that children who know more words when they enter kindergarten tend to read better and have higher academic achievement throughout school. Children who are read to more often are exposed to more new words and develop a more robust understanding of language. A 2019 study by The Ohio State University found that young children whose parents read to them five times daily will hear nearly 1.5 million more words by the time they turn five than children who were not read to at all. This is known as the “million-word gap. – United Through Reading website. \nAbbott Library encourages families to join staff members for our weekly storytimes each Wednesday at 10 AM. SUMMARY:Last of the Granite State Rattlesnakes
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, September 29\n5:30—6:30 PM\nActivities Room \nRattlesnakes were so common in colonial-era New Hampshire that dozens of places were named for them\, ranging from the Massachusetts border to the White Mountains. They were so abundant some settlers could pay their property taxes with the bounties offered for killing them. Today\, however\, Crotalus horridus\, the timber rattlesnake\, is the state’s rarest native animal—only a handful are known to survive. State law protects them now\, but that may not be enough to save them. Wildlife biologists have predicted this tiny remnant will die out without extraordinary intervention. \nHow did this feared and fascinating animal come to the very brink of extirpation in our state? This illustrated presentation maps how we got here through the social\, political\, and natural history of New Hampshire’s rattlesnakes. Historian and former newspaper reporter Dan Billin presents vivid\, little-known stories and images from our centuries-long war on our rattlesnakes. Topics include who’s been bitten; the medicinal use of rattlesnake oil by the Shakers and others; the exploits of the “Rattlesnake King of New Hampshire”; the twentieth-century rattlesnake panic in the legislature; and the mysterious recent appearance of rattlesnakes with Pennsylvania genes. This program reviews what is and isn’t being done today to conserve our rattlesnakes\, and the many obstacles to their survival. \nNo Registration Required

DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jess Trout-Haney of Dartmouth and LSPA Burkehaven Fellow Maura Beatty for a look at LSPA’s collaborative cyanobacteria monitoring and research this summer. \nJess and Maura will share what we’ve learned about measuring and tracking cyanobacteria populations in Lake Sunapee. This work has allowed us to establish standardized monitoring protocols and strengthen our research collaborations. The resulting datasets provide essential baseline information for better understanding the drivers of cyanobacterial blooms and the role of cyanobacteria in the lake’s food web. \nClick here to register.
