DESCRIPTION:Reading aloud to children is one of the best things you can do for their development. Not only is it fun\, but it is also a bonding experience that can impact their literacy skills\, emotional well-being\, and love of reading. Studies have shown that children who know more words when they enter kindergarten tend to read better and have higher academic achievement throughout school. Children who are read to more often are exposed to more new words and develop a more robust understanding of language. A 2019 study by The Ohio State University found that young children whose parents read to them five times daily will hear nearly 1.5 million more words by the time they turn five than children who were not read to at all. This is known as the “million-word gap. – United Through Reading website. \nAbbott Library encourages families to join staff members for our weekly storytimes each Wednesday at 10 AM. DESCRIPTION:Tattercoats is the wife-and-husband folk duo of Ned Joyner and Charlotte Wager-Miller. Described as sounding “like a warm\, comforting bowl of soup\,” they draw from their southern Indiana roots to forge a style that is both earthy and refined—rooted in tradition and distinguished by “breathtaking tight vocal harmonies” \nTheir wide repertoire spans centuries and continents: from Old World ballads and Appalachian traditionals to country standards\, folk revival classics\, and familiar favorites of the 1950s\, ’60s\, and ’70s. \nMusic has always been central to their story. It first brought them together as a couple\, and later became their anchor when they moved to New York City in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. In those strange and unsettled times\, they turned instinctively to folk music. The songs of resilience\, heartbreak\, resistance and celebration in the folk canon became a vital source of comfort\, connection and joy. \nThis experience instilled a deep appreciation for vernacular music’s ability to gather people around the hearth of our shared humanity—a lasting impression that guides their approach today. In an increasingly isolated\, divided and virtual world\, Tattercoats offer folk music as a grounding force to rekindle connection and belonging.
