SUMMARY:Sunapee Traffic Calming Pop-Up
DESCRIPTION:Traffic Calming Pop-Up on Route 11: May 31 to June 8 \nThe Town of Sunapee\, in partnership with the Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission (UVLSRPC) and Forward Sunapee\, will host a temporary “Traffic Calming Pop-Up” along Route 11 near Lower Main Street from Sunday\, May 31 through Monday\, June 8. The project will test a temporary roadway redesign to calm traffic\, improve pedestrian safety\, and create a more inviting\, walkable environment. \nDuring the demonstration\, roadway changes will include re-striped and protected crosswalks\, median traffic posts\, delineated parking\, temporary markings for potential parking and public-use space\, and flowers and other placemaking elements. These are intended to slow traffic at the NH 11/Lower Main Street intersection\, provide clearer visual cues for drivers\, and convert some roadway space into community space. \nThe pop-up is a short-term demonstration only and not a final design. Any future permanent improvements would require full engineering design\, review\, and approval by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT). This type of demonstration helps the community visualize potential changes\, discuss traffic safety needs\, and gather information on how design elements affect speeds and safety for all users. \nCommunity members are encouraged to drive\, walk\, and bike through the area during the pop-up and share feedback on the temporary changes. Volunteers are also needed to help with setup\, monitoring\, and breakdown; details are available via the project QR code or by contacting the planner below. \n \nFor more information or to get involved\, please contact:\nTim Josephson\, UVLSRPC Planner\ntjosephson@uvlsrpc.org | 603-448-1680 ext. 105

SUMMARY:Story Time
DESCRIPTION:Reading aloud to children is one of the best things you can do for their development. Not only is it fun\, but it is also a bonding experience that can impact their literacy skills\, emotional well-being\, and love of reading. Studies have shown that children who know more words when they enter kindergarten tend to read better and have higher academic achievement throughout school. Children who are read to more often are exposed to more new words and develop a more robust understanding of language. A 2019 study by The Ohio State University found that young children whose parents read to them five times daily will hear nearly 1.5 million more words by the time they turn five than children who were not read to at all. This is known as the “million-word gap. – United Through Reading website. \nAbbott Library encourages families to join staff members for our weekly storytimes each Wednesday at 10 AM. Participants hear stories\, sing songs\, and create a craft.\nFor more information\, call or email the library at 603.763.5513 or info@abbottlibrary.org.

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence Today
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be everywhere today. It provides summary results for our Internet searches. It offers to improve our emails. It provides recommendations for books and movies and TV shows we might like. But what is AI? And\, in particular\, what is generative AI? In this presentation\, Dr. Cathie LeBlanc will explore the history of AI\, the different types of AI\, how AI works\, and why it seems to be everywhere at the moment. She will also discuss the pros and cons of AI use in a variety of contexts. \nCathie LeBlanc is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Florida State University with a BA\, MS\, and PhD in computer science. Her first encounter with artificial intelligence came in 1984 at Dartmouth\, the birthplace of AI. Her graduate work focused on developing AI tools for use in molecular biology applications. She taught computer science\, digital media\, and game design at Plymouth State University for 28 years before retiring in January\, 2026. She lives in Campton\, NH\, with her cat\, RBG.

SUMMARY:Portraits of a Revolution
DESCRIPTION:This program explores American portraits painted and sculpted during the years leading up to\, and the decades after\, the Revolution. The ideals\, values and virtues expressly stated in our founding documents are easily identifiable in these portraits once we know how to “read” them. We will examine portraits of founding “fathers” and “mothers\,” as well as of lesser-known individuals\, as documents that can be read like texts. We will also discuss the tradition of portraiture\, and the influences of earlier art movements\, artists\, and artifacts\, that inform these American portraits. Audiences will be introduced to\, and practice\, some skills of art analysis and learn how art works can reveal so much about a culture. \nAbout the Speaker: \nInez McDermott  has been teaching art history and curating art and history exhibitions in New Hampshire since 1986. In her classes and research she explores the ways that art can play a role in social engagement\, participatory democracy\, and activism. Her specific research interests focus on historical and contemporary New Hampshire art and artists\, with a particular focus on 19th-century photography.

SUMMARY:One Land\, Two Nations: A Political History of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
DESCRIPTION:To understand the headlines of today\, one must first navigate the layered history of the last century. This talk serves as a comprehensive primer on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict\, tracing its evolution from the rise of political Zionism in 1897 through the transformative events of October 7. Rather than viewing the struggle as an intractable religious feud\, this presentation frames the conflict as a modern political struggle over land\, sovereignty\, and national identity. \nWe will examine the pivotal moments that shaped the current landscape—including the British Mandate\, the 1948 and 1967 wars\, and the Oslo Accords—to see how past decisions have narrowed or defined the paths available today. By exploring how two distinct nations came to claim the same territory\, attendees will gain a clearer understanding of the historical drivers behind the current crisis and the complex hurdles standing in the way of a lasting solution. \nAbout the Speaker: \nEric Boyer is a professor at Colby Sawyer College\, since 2008. He earned a Ph.D from the University of Minnesota. He formerly served as a lecturer at the University of Minnesota and as an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Saint Thomas University. Eric’s areas of expertise include American studies\, government\, history\, and philosophy. \nNo Registration Required

SUMMARY:Movie Night: Jurassic World
DESCRIPTION:Join us to watch Jurassic World on the projector! \nJurassic World has been running with great success for more than a decade in the wake of the disaster that haunted the island twenty-two years ago. The park’s geneticists have once again broken scientific and ethical boundaries in order to raise attendance for the park\, now experiencing a decline in happy customers. Convinced that the new attraction will bring in many more people\, but having crossed the line once again\, the results may be devastating. \nRated PG-13 \n\n\nNo Registration Required
