SUMMARY:The Common Loon: A New Hampshire Icon
DESCRIPTION:For many\, the haunting call of the loon is an important part of the New Hampshire lake experience. Often seen as a symbol of the northern wilderness\, loons are a beloved fixture on New Hampshire lakes\, and many lakegoers enjoy watching them as they raise their young. However\, the breeding season can be a vulnerable time for loons—they face many threats\, both natural and human-caused\, while on our lakes. This presentation will focus on the biology and life history of loons\, the threats that loons face\, and the work that the Loon Preservation Committee and our volunteers have performed since 1975 to help recover New Hampshire’s threatened loon population.

SUMMARY:Open Table Project Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:Join the conversations around the table. We’re not solving the problems of the world\, just chatting and getting to know one another. Our world and even our own community have become increasingly discordant and dominated by divisive rhetoric. We are hoping that as people come to know each other better on a more personal level\, conversations can be had without the hard edge that has developed. “There are no strangers here; only friends you haven’t yet met.” (William Butler Yeats). Come and meet a stranger and leave having made a new friend. \n TheOpenTableProject@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Discovering New England Stone Walls
DESCRIPTION:Join library staff as we welcome Kevin Gardner on Saturday\, October 11th! Kevin’s informal talk will touch on the history\, technique\, stylistic development\, and aesthetics of stone walls\, as covered in his book The Granite Kiss.
