SUMMARY:Portraits of a Revolution
DESCRIPTION:This program explores American portraits painted and sculpted during the years leading up to\, and the decades after\, the Revolution. The ideals\, values and virtues expressly stated in our founding documents are easily identifiable in these portraits once we know how to “read” them. We will examine portraits of founding “fathers” and “mothers\,” as well as of lesser-known individuals\, as documents that can be read like texts. We will also discuss the tradition of portraiture\, and the influences of earlier art movements\, artists\, and artifacts\, that inform these American portraits. Audiences will be introduced to\, and practice\, some skills of art analysis and learn how art works can reveal so much about a culture. \nAbout the Speaker: \nInez McDermott  has been teaching art history and curating art and history exhibitions in New Hampshire since 1986. In her classes and research she explores the ways that art can play a role in social engagement\, participatory democracy\, and activism. Her specific research interests focus on historical and contemporary New Hampshire art and artists\, with a particular focus on 19th-century photography.

SUMMARY:Mapping Water Quality Data for Community Action: Highlights from the work of Burkehaven Fellow Alyssa Spencer
DESCRIPTION:Since joining LSPA as a Burkehaven Fellow in 2025\, Alyssa Spencer has transformed important water quality data into tools and resources that have been instrumental in the success of projects aimed at improving water quality throughout the Lake Sunapee Watershed. Her work has included mapping septic failure data\, modeling water quality risks in the watershed\, and creating a new water quality database to analyze and visualize LSPA’s 40 years of water quality data. Her work beautifully communicates key messages about science in a way that is intuitive and engaging for audiences. We hope you will join us to hear more about her work\, and how it has enhanced our ability to use our data to inform our community and our actions. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:One Land\, Two Nations: A Political History of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
DESCRIPTION:To understand the headlines of today\, one must first navigate the layered history of the last century. This talk serves as a comprehensive primer on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict\, tracing its evolution from the rise of political Zionism in 1897 through the transformative events of October 7. Rather than viewing the struggle as an intractable religious feud\, this presentation frames the conflict as a modern political struggle over land\, sovereignty\, and national identity. \nWe will examine the pivotal moments that shaped the current landscape—including the British Mandate\, the 1948 and 1967 wars\, and the Oslo Accords—to see how past decisions have narrowed or defined the paths available today. By exploring how two distinct nations came to claim the same territory\, attendees will gain a clearer understanding of the historical drivers behind the current crisis and the complex hurdles standing in the way of a lasting solution. \nAbout the Speaker: \nEric Boyer is a professor at Colby Sawyer College\, since 2008. He earned a Ph.D from the University of Minnesota. He formerly served as a lecturer at the University of Minnesota and as an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Saint Thomas University. Eric’s areas of expertise include American studies\, government\, history\, and philosophy. \nNo Registration Required

SUMMARY:Redcoats and Rebels
DESCRIPTION:Mary Adams\, from NH Historical Society\, will tell the story of New Hampshire’s often unsung contributions to our independence. \nAll events are free and at the Flanders-Osborne Museum in Sunapee Harbor unless noted otherwise. \nNew Hampshire often gets overlooked in the narrative of the American Revolution\, overshadowed by its noisy neighbor to the south. Nowadays\, few people know about Paul Revere’s first ride\, which was to Portsmouth in December 1774 to warn the patriots that the British were coming to reinforce Fort William and Mary\, five months before the Redcoats marched on Concord and Lexington. Nor do they know that two-thirds of the troops at the Battle of Bunker Hill were from New Hampshire. Most people are also unaware that New Hampshire’s Provincial Congress adopted the first state constitution in January 1776\, making no mention of royal authority and essentially declaring independence from Great Britain six months before anyone else. And this is just the beginning of New Hampshire’s revolutionary story. \nSponsored by NH Humanities
