DESCRIPTION:Reading aloud to children is one of the best things you can do for their development. Not only is it fun\, but it is also a bonding experience that can impact their literacy skills\, emotional well-being\, and love of reading. Studies have shown that children who know more words when they enter kindergarten tend to read better and have higher academic achievement throughout school. Children who are read to more often are exposed to more new words and develop a more robust understanding of language. A 2019 study by The Ohio State University found that young children whose parents read to them five times daily will hear nearly 1.5 million more words by the time they turn five than children who were not read to at all. This is known as the “million-word gap. – United Through Reading website. \nAbbott Library encourages families to join staff members for our weekly storytimes each Wednesday at 10 AM. DESCRIPTION:Since 2017\, Empty Bowl has brought Sunapee together in the most meaningful (and delicious!) way. What began as a simple idea from Sunapee Middle High School students and teachers—wanting to give back—has grown into one of our community’s favorite annual gatherings. \nEach year\, a local artist crafts dozens of beautiful\, one-of-a-kind pottery bowls. Then\, the community comes together at The Livery to share a homemade meal and dessert served right in those handcrafted bowls. Laughter\, conversation\, and the smell of good food fill the room—there’s something truly special about it. \nAnd the best part? You get to take your bowl home as a keepsake—a reminder of the good we can do when we gather around the table together. \nEmpty Bowl isn’t just a dinner; it’s a celebration of creativity\, kindness\, and community spirit—all wrapped up in one warm bowl. \nWhat is an Empty Bowl Dinner?\nEmpty Bowls is a grassroots movement by artists and crafts people in cities and towns around the world to raise money for food related charities to care for and feed the hungry in their communities. \nCost: $20/per person includes a full meal\, and a handmade artisan bowl. \nDinner reservations are required and must be made no later than November 4th. \nBuy Tickets Here \nAll proceeds from this event go to Sunapee’s Food Pantry. DESCRIPTION:Reading aloud to children is one of the best things you can do for their development. Not only is it fun\, but it is also a bonding experience that can impact their literacy skills\, emotional well-being\, and love of reading. Studies have shown that children who know more words when they enter kindergarten tend to read better and have higher academic achievement throughout school. Children who are read to more often are exposed to more new words and develop a more robust understanding of language. A 2019 study by The Ohio State University found that young children whose parents read to them five times daily will hear nearly 1.5 million more words by the time they turn five than children who were not read to at all. SUMMARY:Understanding and Controlling Invasive Species: Science\, Strategies\, and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging presentation on the impacts of invasive species in our watershed\, featuring LSPA Executive Director and former Ecology Professor Elizabeth Harper\, along with Conservation Program Manager Susie Burbidge. Together\, they will explore the science and ecology of invasive species\, as well as the tradeoffs involved in different methods of control and prevention. Susie will highlight LSPA’s two lines of defense against aquatic invasive species: the Lake Host Program and the Invasive Watch Program. SUMMARY:Sunapee CoffeeHouse - Robyn Macy
DESCRIPTION:Robyn’s musical journey began in the nineteen sixties during “the Great Folk Scare.”  Early influences included listening to the music of Dave Van Ronk and Mississippi John Hurt whose finger-picking seemed to be just this side of magical. Over all the years\, her love of the fingerstyle blues has persisted and expanded. \nAfter college and grad school\, a decades long engineering career interrupted Robyn’s musical pursuits but after a lapse of many years\, she returned to music with enthusiasm. During the past ten years Robyn has performed at open mics in Sunapee\, Andover and Warner\, playing both covers and some original material. Robyn is therefore a newcomer to the stage\, with tonight’s debut performance being the fulfillment of a dream many years in the making. She aims to make it a good one. \nBeyond the blues\, Robyn loves songs with some emotional heft and she frequently sings songs that tell a story. Songs that are poignant\, wistful\, funny\, or gritty all reach out to her. So\, look for some traditional fingerstyle blues\, some covers that may pull the heart strings and some original songs as well.
