SUMMARY:Story Time
DESCRIPTION:Reading aloud to children is one of the best things you can do for their development. Not only is it fun\, but it is also a bonding experience that can impact their literacy skills\, emotional well-being\, and love of reading. Studies have shown that children who know more words when they enter kindergarten tend to read better and have higher academic achievement throughout school. Children who are read to more often are exposed to more new words and develop a more robust understanding of language. A 2019 study by The Ohio State University found that young children whose parents read to them five times daily will hear nearly 1.5 million more words by the time they turn five than children who were not read to at all. This is known as the “million-word gap. – United Through Reading website. \nAbbott Library encourages families to join staff members for our weekly storytimes each Wednesday at 10 AM. Participants hear stories\, sing songs\, and create a craft.\nFor more information\, call or email the library at 603.763.5513 or info@abbottlibrary.org.

SUMMARY:Vernal Pool Amphibians
DESCRIPTION:April is a time of migration for many amphibians in our watershed\, as they move from their overwintering habitats in forests to their breeding sites in vernal pools and other wetland areas. Learn more about the biology\, behavior\, and conservation of these fascinating animals from LSPA’s Executive Director\, Elizabeth Harper. Elizabeth’s Ph.D. research focused on the population dynamics of wood frogs and spotted salamanders\, two of the most abundant spring breeding amphibians in our region. SUMMARY:Thomas Strayhorn
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Strayhorn is a Portland\, Maine based singer-songwriter originally from the piedmont of North Carolina. “His simple melodies draw from folk but veer toward alt-country\, likely thanks to Strayhorn’s brassy twang. They’re adorned with little more than bare-bones arrangements (think: Joe Pug or Langhorne Slim)\, but Strayhorn’s songs tell stories that unfold poetically and genuinely…” – Patrick Wall. \n“The push-and-pull is almost palpable… His lyrics capture ‘the conflicting emotions of having so many reasons to stay somewhere but still wanting to leave.’” — Madeline Crone
